From The Beauty Shop: New packaging design just in from the printer! Red Radish is a gourmet organic food delivery service here in Portland, headed by chef Timothy Bartling. More about Red Radish soon!
I recently had the pleasure of working on branding with an enigmatic Texas-based painter who goes by the name of SHREW, for The Beauty Shop. It was a unique and very fruitful creative process, with lots of visual ideas being passed back and forth…challenging, enjoyable, and inspiring. The direction we eventually ended up with for her branding is really a weird and wonderful hybrid of her work and mine, and I'll show that off later when her website is complete. But for now, I wanted to share some of my favorite outtakes from this project:
A poster and postcard for the Portland Chamber Orchestra's May 2014 concert, with original artwork I created based on the Viktor Hartmann paintings in the exhibition that inspired Mussorgsky's work. I re-drew the basic shapes of Hartmann's painting of the Gate of Kiev in vector, and then used snippets of Russian lace to give it some texture.
The Gate of Kiev, painting by Viktor Hartmann, above. My re-creation, in vector and lace, at right.
A new site launch for The Beauty Shop: Tasha Le Mel, Los Angeles image consultant, stylist and costumer. With a background in fashion magazines, film and television, Tasha's approach to personal style as a tool for self-image building is based on a her great ability to help her clients express themselves and feel empowered and awesome. Check her out!
These past few months The Beauty Shop and I have had the honor of working with Lisa Brown, illustrator, children's book author, noted wit and co-conspirator of the elusive Lemony Snicket, on her new website, American Chickens. This was our first experience designing a site that was art directed by the client, and thanks to Lisa's great talent, it was an absolute pleasure. Check it out!
My latest branding project with The Beauty Shop, BLKFISK is a surf lifestyle brand. I love this project! We were really inspired by owner Kevyn Murphy's fascination with the colorful, blocky lexicon of nautical flags. The aha moment of this project was when we realized that the flag that symbolizes the letter "B" is also used to indicate "Dangerous Cargo" (awesome!) and is referenced in the forked flag shape you'll see in the brand marks.
Stay tuned for more when we develop their packaging and website!
